The One where I hugged Ronald McDonald

Cant believe we've been 'Pharming' straight for close to 4 months now. Everyone would agree that we all could use a break. Going back and looking at the curriculum we've covered; I've realized that we have condensed Medical Pharmacology from 2 years of Medical School into these 4 months. Its been hectic, though I've enjoyed every portion of it. What's been great is that different Tulane professors from different departments of the Medical School and the School of Public Health have been delivering a lot of lectures for these past two blocks. The curriculum ties up with pharmacology but it helps us understand the perspective of these topics from these other professors who have different backgrounds. It expands our mind outside of just pharmacology, which has been leading to a lot of debates between the students on these topics. This month I decided to catch up on my Volunteer hours since the weather has gotten a little cooler and more opportunities have popped up. A couple of us volunteered at a 5K race hosted by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) who give scholarships to Historically Black colleges & Universities such as Xavier and Dillard here in New Orleans. We helped set up and break  the tents/booths for all the groups who had come out to support the cause. We decided to volunteer here and support the cause because a lot of students here in New Orleans don't ever see themselves affording a college tuition. This organization has helped send thousands of kids to college and will continue to do so. I also flew back home to Dallas this past weekend where I got involved with a organization I have been apart of my undergrad years. The service project that the organization does every month is called 'Project Downtown'. One Saturday of every month the organization takes the money it has raised for the month and purchases and prepares meals for the less fortunate. We head to Dallas downtown and distribute the meals to these people, the experience is just something else. It really makes you count each and everyone of your blessings. I really want to bring down a project like this to our program because of the huge homeless population we have here in New Orleans. It would be easy to prepare and distribute the meals because so many homeless people are practically neighbors to our school. It would put a lot of smiling faces on these people (even though the Saints are doing a good job of that, WHO DAT!). I'm going to try to talk to the program heads for some funding and see what we can do. Stay tuned!
