The One with the free tacos

This past month we took a NBME pharmacology shelf exam. Although the studying was a long continuous process for a couple weeks, it kind of seemed fun to me (as weird as that sounds). Going over all the material we learned from the beginning of the year the 2nd time around was somewhat easier and made a whole lot more sense. I made a lot of connections with the drugs to where and why we use them there. All of the mechanisms of actions, side effects, and contraindications now made sense; we now weren't memorizing these drugs just to memorize. As I had mentioned a couple blog posts back, I really want to help the homeless population of New Orleans. Driving around everyday I run into at least 5 homeless people and it breaks my heart that I cannot help them all. Recently I started to take more action to this problem by creating a sort of food drive myself where I stock up the back seat of my car with various non-perishable goods. I started distributing these goods to whoever is in need

The One where we all got to go to a Saints playoff game

Even though we were looking forward to our winter break; I was glad to be back in the classroom January 3rd. I really missed my classmates and the city of New Orleans. This month went by weirdly really slow and I don't know why. I felt like we did so much this month I wouldn't know where to begin. All of our new classes are super exciting and its just not plain studying like it was last semester. Although plain studying wasn't a burden, the more interactive approach we have in this semesters classes helps different concepts of pharmacology stick better. Alongside school a lot of us who are to apply this upcoming cycle have started studying for the MCAT diligently. Classes kind of have been a little bit of a break from the strict "head in book" routine we have with this MCAT prep. The One where I felt at home

This month in New Orleans flew by like no other. I finally feel like I am apart of the city now and do not feel like someone new. The curriculum definitely has gotten more interesting as we jump into the different blocks that focus on treating infections/diseases we see in people on the daily basis. From hypertension to heart attacks, the curriculum is helping us understand how and why specific drugs are administered; something Ive personally been seeing since I have been in high school working in clinics. The coursework has also helped me understand the importance of various methods of research which in the past I have been dispassionate about. Our volunteering component of the curriculum has finally started up in full swing which I actually have been looking forward to. Ever since Hurricane Katrina I saw what had happened to the city and my family.
